Tom Ackerman

The Vintage Conservatory is proud to have Tom Ackerman as our featured artist. His outstanding paintings can be seen in nearly every one of our rooms and is among one of the largest galleries of work we have featured thus far.

"As a painter for more than 40 years I have endeavoured to elicit a visceral experience of my paintings for the viewer. My interest is not only WHAT (subject) I’m painting but HOW (process) I physically make a painting. Half my subject is the painting itself. I have developed a very personal way of applying my materials onto the canvas, in spirit, much like Pollock or Frankenthaler dripping or pouring. I am using a 600 year old medium (oil paint) and re-invented (altered) it to suit my unique process. My paint surfaces are either highly reflective (without topical varnishes) or extremely rough and textured. A brush has not touched the final surface."

The Playing Cards Series

"The Card series of paintings were my breakthrough paintings in the use of my transfer technique. I utilized the structure of a standard playing card, (primarily face cards), to transfer half of a completed image by taking a paper imprint and reproducing it inversely underneath it to produce a completed card. I was captivated by the effect of being able to make a painting without recognizing any traditional brush work that we expect to see in a painting. These works motivated me to further explore the possibilities of this process which have brought me to my present use of POLYTARP plastic, to make my paintings."
