Thomas A. Edison Automotive Technology Students gearing up for the National Automotive Technology Competition

CTE students Nicholas Bhurasingh and Julio Pineda, together with their coach Miquel Sierra beat out 11 other schools to win the NY regional round of the Automotive Technology Competition and are ready to vie for a new title and an opportunity at competing for more than $3 million in scholarships and prizes at the National Competition.

In February, Edison students competed in the Regional round of the automotive competition as if they were technicians working at a dealership.  Each team in the contest had to fix issues ranging from cars not starting to making sure the windshield wipers worked properly.  All work had to be completed for an auto inspection within three hours.

Chancellor Fariña met the contestants to congratulate and wish them a successful performance in the finals.

UA Maker's First Ever Design Jam celebrates Women's History Month

On March 23, 2016, The Urban Assembly Maker Academy hosted its first ever Design Jam. Organized by UA Maker's CTE Advisory Board members Paul McConnell of Intersection, Louisa Campbell of Parsons, Nick Normal of the World Maker Faire and Stephen Gilman of Maker-state, the event presented 10th grade students with an authentic problem-statement and tasked teams to solve the problem by designing either an app, social media campaign, robot or school tradition. The problem-statement: How can UA Maker increase its enrollment of girls? Enrollment has decreased by ~6% each year since its opening in 2014; currently, females make up only 34% of the total student body.

Each team was coached by a maker industry professional from companies such as Prolific Interactive, Engine Digital, Second Muse, General Assembly and more! Teams were evaluated on their use of design thinking as a problem-solving schema and on their final product. Judges included Deputy Borough President Matthew Washington, Maddy Maxey of The CRATED, Craig Nevill-Manning of Sidewalk Labs, Amanda O'Donnell of Intersection + Women in Tech, Michelle Gonsieski of the Manhattan Supreme Civil Court, and Alexis Goldberg of The Urban Assembly.

Here is the link to the student filmed, produced, edited, video that was an "entry doc" for the event:
