| Africa Experience On December 9 students in fifth and third grades saw a wonderful presentation by the Lackey family. Mrs. Lackey, Skip and Katie shared photographs, stories, and cultural mementos from their recent travels to Uganda. The family made the trip earlier this year to bring home Skip and Katie’s new younger brother. While in Africa they saw and photographed wildlife such as lions, giraffes, and hippos. They experienced, first hand, a very different culture that was both beautiful in the arts, crafts, music and dance, and heartbreaking in its poverty. The Lackey family then shared some samples of the native foods they had enjoyed in Uganda. TIS students agreed that this was an outstanding way to experience a unique culture through the camera lens and words and experiences of their
classmates, Skip and Katie.

| Heart Month February is designated as “Heart Month” by the American Heart Association. We have all been or are currently being affected by someone with heart health issues. In physical education class students are going to spend 1 hour during the week of February 6- 10, 2017, participating in a ”Hoops for Heart Rate Monitors” event. Our goal is $1,500. This system is a way for students to see firsthand the importance of a healthy heart. It allows them to observe how their heart functions during exercise. Happy, healthy kids perform better in school!

| W.I.N Time in 5th Grade Throughout the month of October, students in Mrs. Broschart’ W.I.N. group read a novel. In order to summarize the book, students chose a project to show their understanding of literary concepts. Some students chose to write poems. Some chose to create a “Book Box” with drawings and objects to represent the novel. Power Point slideshows were created too. In addition to those, a few members created an online “Kahoot” quiz show.

| State of Matter in 3rd Grade In our unit on States of Matter, we are learning to classify substances as solids, liquids, or gases using physical properties. We are also describing how these properties can be changed. Some types of matter (like slime) are mixtures. We combined a solid with two liquids to make something totally different. Mixtures don't follow the rules of matter, but they are fun to experiment with!
