Environmental Influences on Population Mental Health Promotion for Children and Youth

All six National Collaborating Centres collaborated to create a new collection on population mental health promotion for children and youth, with the aim of increasing understanding and encouraging discussion about how to better integrate and strengthen public health practice in this area. Mental health wellness is a public health priority that will benefit from front-line staff working in collaboration with others to build healthy and resilient communities.

The project collection includes five papers on the following topics: the environment, infectious diseases, chronic diseases, healthy public policy, and Indigenous health. Environmental Influences was written by the NCCEH and the NCC for Determinants of Health to provide an overview of the evidence of how the built, natural and social environments affect the mental well-being of children.

Green Space and Mental Health: Pathways, Impacts and Gaps

The physical and mental health effects associated with the built and natural environments, including green space, are of growing interest to the public health community. The NCCEH has summarized a student evidence review on the impact of green space on population mental health and on those diagnosed with mental health disorders. Both the original review and the summary are available below.

The Impacts of Climate Change on Mental Health and Well-Being

The US Global Change Research Program has released a comprehensive scientific assessment that examines how climate change is affecting human health. Each chapter characterizes the strength of the scientific evidence for a given “link” in the causal chain between a climate change impact and its associated health outcome. Chapter 8 of the assessment, linked below, focuses specifically on mental health and well-being.
