Splash Parks and Public Health Risks

Splash parks are a fun and economical way for users to enjoy outdoor recreation in the summer, and are commonly seen in Canadian parks and play areas. However, they may also present an increased risk of contamination and disease transmission that can be mitigated through proper design and operation.

Oceans, Lakes, and Other Natural Venues

Untreated recreational water venues, such as oceans, lakes, and rivers, attract large numbers of users year-round. The resources presented on this new topic page provide information on hazard identification, water quality monitoring, and risk communication.​

Pools, Hot Tubs, and Other Treated Facilities

Treated recreation water facilities include public swimming pools, hot tubs, splash parks, and wading pools. This new topic page contains resources that address the design, construction, and operation of these facilities.

Responding to Wildfire Smoke

With extreme temperatures of these recent months giving way to numerous active wildfires in the British Columbia Interior, the NCCEH would like to remind all practitioners to take advantage of all resources available on the BCCDC Air Quality page, including its most recent addition, the BC Health Wildfire Smoke Response Coordination Guideline.

• Edrene Cabantog, a Master of Public Health in Environmental and Occupational Health student from Simon Fraser University, for Strategies to Mitigate the Impacts of Extreme Heat Events Among Homeless Populations in BC’s Lower Mainland
• Emily Denstedt, a Master of Public Health student from the University of Guelph, for Echinococcus multilocularis as an emerging public health threat in Canada
• Ken Diplock, a PhD student at the School of Public Health and Health Systems from the University of Waterloo, for Application of behaviour change theories to food safety education in youth

EIDM Casebook Entry: CO in Long-Term Care Facilities
• In order to protect vulnerable populations in long-term care facilities from the risk of carbon monoxide exposure, a pilot program was created to establish a CO monitoring and response framework. • The next NCCEH eJournal Club will take place at noon on Thursday September 28 to discuss the short paper: Water Quality Survey of Splash Pads After a Waterborne Salmonellosis Outbreak (Clayton et al., 2017). Online registration will open in early September.
