From, For, and Towards

On Sunday we started a new conversation called "God of the Margins" where we're exploring the good news of God's presence with those who've been neglected, silenced, oppressed, and more.  As we kicked off the series, Greg did an awesome job leading us in a reflection of how Christ is not only from and for the margins, but also calls us towards these areas of our lives and world, so that we can be people mercy, justice, and love. If you missed Sunday, you can always check out our facebook page to see the live stream recordings from our Sunday convos.  Over the coming weeks we hope you can join what should be an engaging, challenging, and encouraging discussion! Additionally, this week was a Third Sunday, so we gave our entire offering away ($550+) to an awesome organization called Youth Together.   In a world with so much brokenness, it's so inspiring to be a part of such a hopeful, generous, and grace-filled community.

As always there are lots of things going on in our community beyond Sundays, so be sure to read below:

Things Going on In and Through Oak Life:

ROOTS-

Newcomers Dessert: Thursday November 9th, 7-8:30pm.  If you're newish to Oak Life and would like to learn more about our story and how to connect, we'd like to invite you to a special dessert at Chris and Alie Scott's home.  RSVP required, so please email back to let us know you're coming!

Letter From a Birmingham Jail Discussion:  As part of our "God of the Margins" series we're inviting the entire church to reflect on the history of marginalization in our country by reading Dr. King's famous letter.  We'll be hosting a special discussion group on Thursday November 16th at 7pm to engage together (location TBD).  For reference, we've posted the letter in it's entirety and an brief introduction on our blog

Life Groups: There are still a few Fall groups that have space - if you'd like to join or you can go to our groups page here to learn more.

Volunteering at Oak Life:  Pretty much everything that happens in Oak Life is a result of folks from the community participating in making us what we are.  We're currently in need of some more volunteers in areas like music, coffee, set up, and media.  If you're rooted at Oak Life we hope you'll commit to volunteer on one of these teams at least once every other month or so.  If you'd like to volunteer or get more info email Greg: greg.oaklife@gmail.com

Social Justice Action Team (working title): We're forming a group of folks who will discern together ways Oak Life can stand for all justice issues and against things like racism as a church more in depth.  Our first meeting, which will include a lot of brainstorming, will be Sunday November 5th after church.  If you'd like more info you can contact Greg who will be helping to facilitate: greg.oaklife@gmail.com

Baptisms: Baptism is a beautiful way to outwardly show an inward faith in Jesus.  We're working on scheduling a baptism up at Lake Temescal soon, so if you'd like like to learn more about Baptism, just email us back!

Facebook Group:  Got a prayer request or community event you'd like to share?  Join our Facebook Group to keep the conversation going.  Also, most Sunday's we live stream part of the service!

BRANCHES-

Project Peace Day Of Service:  Our next time serving with PP will be Sat Nov 4th at Harbor House.  This is a great way to serve our community and get connected.  To RSVP click here.

Third Sunday Giving Update:  Once a month we give away our entire offering to a local group or cause and it's been super encouraging to see the ways we've been able to join in good work in our community.  This week Oak Life gave over $550 to Youth Together!  If you'd like to watch a thank you from some of our third Sunday partners click here.

Myanmar Trip Jan 2018: A few Oak Life folks will be heading to Myanmar to visit a partner community and support our friend Phyu as she heads home after finishing up her college program here in Oakland.  For more info email Cory.

Homeless Community Support: Oak Life is connected to a local camp community and we're always looking for donations to bring our friends.  Current needs include: bottle waters, clipper/bart cards, packs of socks, cold meds, and gift cards.  If you'd like to donate, just bring something in on a Sunday and we'll deliver it that week.

Pray for Kaitlyn Gentilin: One of our community members, Kaitlyn, is currently serving as a relief nurse in Puerto Rico.  Let's keep her and Puerto Rico in our prayers!

Other Stuff?  Got ideas for other ways we can serve our community?  Want to start a new group?  Interested in organizing a hike our outing? Oak Life is a community led church- so let's make it happen.  Just shoot us back an email.

That's all for now!

Grace and Peace,

Chris Scott
