Healthy Food Environments in Canada

The food environments in places where people live, work, and play, greatly influence and shape our diets and eating habits. There is strong evidence linking diet and the risk of developing chronic diseases, including cancer, coronary heart disease, and stroke, as well as health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. The latest NCCEH topic page includes resources on how food environments pertain to public health practice, tools for measuring local food environments, and the current state of food environments in Canada.

Food Deserts and Food Swamps

Food deserts are geographic areas that have limited access to healthy food. In contrast, food swamps have adequate access to healthy food, but also feature an overabundance of exposure to less healthy food and beverages. This primer discusses the related health implications of both food environments and highlights some opportunities for action.

Food Environments: An Introduction for Public Health Practice

This document introduces the concept of food environments, highlights some key evidence for the relationship between food environments and health, and identifies some ways environmental public health practitioners can influence food environments.​

Food Issue Notes
• The BC Centre for Disease Control has added two more entries into its Food Issues: Notes from the Field  collection, this time covering fermented nut cheese and salt koji fermentation.
