THANK YOU!

Horse Council BC would like to say thank you to everyone who donated to HCBC’s Animal Disaster Relief Fund. Your efforts helped in the evacuation and housing of displaced equines throughout this devastating wildfire season in BC.

We would love to be able to thank each donor individually, but due to the overwhelming number of people that donated, we understand that we simply cannot. Thank you everyone! Thank you to the volunteers, haulers, and evacuation centres, for your long hours, hard work and phenomenal effort and sacrifice helping during the wildfire situation. Approximate numbers indicate that over 6,000 horses were displaced this summer.

We have already been able to spend over $40,000 of the Animal Disaster Relief Fund to help wildfire efforts & we are fully prepared to keep helping throughout this coming winter, as long as the funds are available and the need exists. The generosity of the equestrian community through this time has been overwhelming, so again thank you so much!

INVASIVE SPECIES OF THE MONTH

Purple Loosestrife (lythrum salicaria) is one of the most unwanted of the invasive species currently threatening BC’s biodiversity. A wetland perennial considered regionally noxious under the BC Weed Control Act, dense stands of purple loosestrife aggressively crowd out native vegetation, threatening the life cycle of native waterfowl, amphibians, and other wetland species in BC. Habitat where fish and wildlife feed, seek shelter, reproduce and rear young, quickly becomes choked under a sea of purple flowers.

Loosestrife is frequently mistaken for Fireweed. Like so many of BC’s unwanted plants, it was introduced deliberately in the 1800’s as an ornamental, quickly escaping garden settings and spreading throughout the province. It’s common in the lower Fraser Valley and frequent on southern Vancouver Island, and in the Okanagan. There are also localized patches in the Kootenay and Omineca regions.

TRAIL OF THE MONTH

Allco Park, Maple Ridge
Horse Council BC was delighted to attend the opening ceremony of the renovated Allco Park horse camping area in Maple Ridge on Saturday, October 28th.

Allco Park is a hidden gem, a 27 acre municipal park located on Alouette Road. The park features include picnic facilities, equestrian camping and trails, plus walking trails and scenic natural areas in the beautiful South Alouette River watershed. An easy river ford near the camping area allows access to the trails in Golden Ears Provincial Park.
The 2017 project, a renewal of footing, pens and surrounding areas carried out by the Haney Horseman Society, was partially funded by HCBC’s BC Equestrian Trail Fund, with additional funds made available by the City of Maple Ridge.

The ribbon cutting ceremony was carried out by Maple Ridge City Councillor Corisa Bell, and the ceremony was made extra special by the attendance of legendary Maple Ridge horse and trail advocate Bill Archibald.

Equestrian use is permitted –visit: https://www.mapleridge.ca/Facilities/Facility/Details/Allco-Park-29 for more information.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

The Principles of Riding
By the German Equestrian Federation.

The Principles of Riding provides a complete instruction course of horse and rider using the German training system — a system that has consistently produced international champions for many decades. The emphasis is on an integral approach to the interaction between horse and rider. It all depends on harmony between horse and rider. The correct seat and the appearance of the horse under the rider are regarded as the result of correct riding.
