Sensing & Discerning

This week we started a new conversation called "Senses" where we're exploring the ways we can encounter God's presence in each of our 5 senses.  As we began our journey, Greg led us in an intro reflection around an important aspect of the life of faith- discernment.  Centering on Jesus' time in the desert, we were encouraged to consider the ways we can sense God's voice and hold what we hear together with scripture, community, and the Spirit's guidance.  It was also a third Sunday, which meant we gave our entire offering ($1820) away to an outside organization.  This month we donated to Axis Dance Company which works uses dance and art to change the face of disability.  Pretty rad.  This coming Sunday we'll be engaging and experiencing the sense of hearing as we continue our Lenton journey towards Easter.  If you'd like to some resources and an intro to what the season of Lent is all about, head over to the blog.   Wherever you're at on your journey, we hope we can travel together!

As always, there are lots of things going on beyond Sundays, so be sure to read below:

LGBT+ Community Group: The next community/support group meeting is this Sunday (Feb 25th) from 3:30-5:30 at the Oak Life Office (337 17th street #102).  To RSVP or for more info email Ed or Sandra

Worship/Prayer/Communion Gathering:  On Wednesday February 28th (7-8pm) there will be a special gathering for extended worship, prayer, and communion. This gathering will be held at All Out Comedy Theater (2525 Telegraph Ave Ste B, Oakland, CA)

Newcomers Dessert:  Thursday March 22nd, 7-8:30pm.  If you're newish to Oak Life and would like to learn more about our story and how to connect, we'd like to invite you to a special dessert at Chris and Alie Scott's home.  RSVP required, so please email back to let us know you're coming!

Volunteering at Oak Life:  Pretty much everything that happens in Oak Life is a result of folks from the community participating in making us what we are.  We're currently in need of some more volunteers in areas like music, coffee, set up, and media.  If you're rooted at Oak Life we hope you'll commit to volunteer on one of these teams at least once every other month or so.  If you'd like to volunteer or get more info email Greg: greg.oaklife@gmail.com

Life Groups: We'll have some Life Group sign ups out this Sunday.  If are interested in hosting a group we could use more spaces for community- email back for more info!

Generosity Towards Oak Life: Oak Life's roots and branches depend on the generosity of it's community members.  If you'd like to practice financial generosity towards Oak Life, which pays for our rent, staff, and ministry expenses- you can do so online through our website here.   There are options to give on a one-time, monthly or periodic basis.   If you have any questions regarding financial stuff at Oak Life you can send an email to the team: finance-team@oaklifechurch.com

Baptisms: Baptism is a beautiful way to outwardly show an inward faith in Jesus.  We're working on scheduling a baptism up at Lake Temescal soon, so if you'd like like to learn more about Baptism, just email us back!

Facebook Group:  Got a prayer request or community event you'd like to share?  Join our Facebook Group to keep the conversation going.  Also, most Sunday's we live stream part of the service!

BRANCHES-

Project Peace Day of Service: Throughout the year Oak Life joins hundreds of other folks in the area for Days of Service with Project Peace. The next one is THIS SATURDAY Feb 24th, mark your calendars and we'll be volunteering at Piedmont Elementary School (Sorry for the switch up- this is per the request of Project Peace. If you registered at Garfield let us know and we'll switch you over!). To RSVP click here.

Third Sunday Giving Update:  Once a month we give away our entire offering to a local group or cause and it's been super encouraging to see the ways we've been able to join in good work in our community.  This month Oak Life gave $1820 to Axis Dance Company.  If you'd like to watch a thank you from some of our third Sunday partners click here.

Homeless Community Support: Oak Life is connected to a local camp community and we're always looking for donations to bring our friends.  Current needs include: bottle waters, clipper/bart cards, packs of socks, cold meds, and gift cards.  If you'd like to donate, just bring something in on a Sunday and we'll deliver it that week.

Social Justice Action Team (working title): We had a great first meeting, thanks to everyone who came out! If you'd like more info you can contact Greg who will be helping to facilitate: greg.oaklife@gmail.com
