Baptisms, Pride, and God's Love

This week was filled with beautiful windows into what God is doing in and through Oak Life.  First on Saturday we were able to celebrate as Leticia and Gustavo got baptized, then on Sunday morning we observed communion together and reflected on the reality of God's love for everyone, everywhere.  Finally, after church we headed down the street to share love and apologies at Oakland Pride.  Thanks to everyone who participated, volunteered, prayed, or took part in the action!  Sometimes it's overwhelming to think about the numerous stories of reconciliation, hope, and healing that are being written in our church, and to think that in many ways we're still just getting started!  If you missed Sunday's gathering, our service was live streamed on facebook here.  This week we'll be closing out the question series as Greg leads us in a conversation around discerning God's will/direction/leading in our lives.

As always, there are lots of other things going on beyond Sundays, so be sure to read below!
Things Going on In and Through Oak Life:

ROOTS:

Childcare Update:  We've been working hard to figure out what childcare will look like for Oak Life! Starting this Sunday September 16th, we'll be providing childcare during the sermon every third Sunday for kids between 9ish months and 4 years old.  The goal is that as our resources and childcare grows we'd be able to provide this space every week. If you're planning on dropping off your child, we'll need you to fill out a brief waiver which we'll have on site every third Sunday.  You can also email back and we'll send you one over.

Stories Sunday:  On September 23rd our Sunday gathering will be a "Stories Sunday" which is a unique gathering centered on stories from the community.  Come with an open mind and heart as folks from Oak Life share a piece of themselves with the church!  If you'd got questions or would like to share, email Kyle: kyleahara@gmail.com

Worship/Communion Night:  On Thursday September 27th (7-8pm) there will be a special gathering for extended worship, prayer, and communion. This gathering will be held at Chapter 510 (2301 Telegraph Ave).

Volunteering at Oak Life:  Pretty much everything that happens in Oak Life is a result of folks from the community participating in making us what we are.  We're currently in need of some more volunteers in areas like music, coffee, set up, and media.  If you're rooted at Oak Life we hope you'll commit to volunteer on one of these teams at least once every other month or so.  If you'd like to volunteer or get more info email Greg: greg.oaklife@gmail.com

Life Groups: Fall groups will be starting late Sep / Early October.  There are various groups meeting at different times/locations around the area.  To learn more click here

Generosity Towards Oak Life: Oak Life's roots and branches depend on the generosity of it's community members.  If you'd like to practice financial generosity towards Oak Life, which pays for our rent, staff, and ministry expenses- you can do so online through our website here.   There are options to give on a one-time, monthly or periodic basis.   If you have any questions regarding financial stuff at Oak Life you can send an email to the team: finance-team@oaklifechurch.com

Facebook Group:  Got a prayer request or community event you'd like to share?  Join our Facebook Group to keep the conversation going.  Also, most Sunday's we live stream part of the service!

Got a Prayer request? Every week, the Oak Life Prayer team spends time praying for Oak Life. If you'd like to have us pray for you during the week, please submit your prayer request here, http://bit.ly/oaklifeprayers. BRANCHES-

Creek to Bay Clean Up Day:  Join your neighbors to clean, green, and beautify Oakland's creeks and shorelines Saturday September 15th from 10am-noon.  Oak Life has adopted this portion of creek and it's been super cool to see the ways our work has made an impact.  Email Sadie if you'd like to attend, more info coming soon.  sgaff25277@gmail.com  Did we mention there would be pizza and snacks?

Third Sunday Giving Update:  Once a month we give away our entire offering to a local group or cause and it's been super encouraging to see the ways we've been able to join in good work in our community.  This month Oak Life gave $250.50 to API Legal Outreach in support of their work to bring awareness around issues like domestic violence, immigration, housing, etc.   If you'd like to watch a thank you from some of our third Sunday partners click here.

Homeless Community Support: Oak Life is connected to a local camp community and we're always looking for donations to bring our friends.  Current needs include: bottle waters, clipper/bart cards, packs of socks, cold meds, and gift cards.  If you'd like to donate, just bring something in on a Sunday and we'll deliver it that week.

Social Justice Team:
We’re steadily building momentum on our first project! (details to come) We’ve also been developing relationships with other social-minded organizations including, OCO, LavaMae, and The Interfaith Council of Alameda. Our current focus is around how we can work toward impacting the housing crisis in our community. If you'd like more info you can contact Greg who will be helping to facilitate: greg@oaklifechurch.com

Other Stuff?  Got ideas for other ways we can serve our community?  Want to start a new group?  Interested in organizing a hike our outing? Oak Life is a community led church- so let's make it happen.  Just shoot us back an email.

That's all for now!

Grace and Peace,

Chris Scott
