Becoming Family

This Sunday we continued our relationship conversation as Leslie led us in a reflection around the nature of family.  As she shared part of her story we were encouraged to find balance in our own families, and also re-imagine what family might look like in light of Jesus' expansive and non-traditional view of family.  No matter what family we come from, we're all invited to be a part of God's family and participate in reconciling work of making all of humanity family.   If you missed this past week's service and would like to check it out, it was live streamed on facebook here. This coming Sunday we'll be wrestling with how to relate to others in the platonic sense, especially those who are different from ourselves.  As always there are lots of things going on beyond Sundays in the life of our community, be sure to check it all out!
Things Going on In and Through Oak Life:

ROOTS:

Childcare this Sunday!  Oak Life is stoked that we now have the resources to have childcare!  As we continue to grow, we currently have childcare every 3rd Sunday of the month during the sermon portion of our gathering.  Kids are welcome in service every other week.

Relationship Series: Currently Sunday gatherings will be reflecting on relationships.  Some of the topics we'll be covering are: relationship to self (2/3), family (2/10), others (2/17) romantic relationships (2/24), and relationships to church (3/3).  We'll also be putting together a couple non-Sunday gatherings to provide space for deeper conversation and growth:

-Relationship Workshop: Codependency & Boundaries, How to become functional with yourself and others.  This workshop will be led by Gina on Sunday February 24th after church at the Oak Life Office.  To RSVP call/text Gina or email us back: (651-214-9960).

-Modern Relationships: A Panel Interview/Discussion: We'll be putting together a special gathering discussing some various experiences, challenges, best practices of folks within Oak Life.  This will be a panel interview at Chapter 510 on Wednesday February 27th at 7pm.  More info to come soon.

Book Club 'So You Want to Talk About Race'  This week we had our first meeting as a book club and decided to meet every week after church for the month of February.  Each meeting we'll be discussing questions and quotes from our reading (6 chapters each week).  The book is called 'So You Want to Talk About Race' by Ijeoma Oluo.  Everyone is welcome to be a part of the discussion each week at Adams whether you've read or not.  To check out the facebook group click here.

Newcomers Dessert: Thursday March 14th 7pm. If you're newish to Oak Life and would like to learn more about our story and how to connect, we'd like to invite you to a special dessert (location TBD).  RSVP required, so please email back to let us know you're coming!

Third Sunday Giving Update:  Once a month we give away our entire offering to a local group or cause and it's been super encouraging to see the ways we've been able to join in good work in our community. Over the past 12 months Oak Life has given away almost $8,000!!!  This month we heard from Bridges Myanmar and we were able to raise $296 to support their work.  If you'd like to watch a thank you from some of our third Sunday partners click here.

Homeless Community Support: Oak Life is connected to a local camp community and we're always looking for donations to bring our friends.  Current needs include: bottle waters, clipper/bart cards, packs of socks, cold meds, and gift cards.  If you'd like to donate, just bring something in on a Sunday and we'll deliver it that week.

Social Justice Team: We‘re steadily building momentum on our first project! (details to come) We‘ve also been developing relationships with other social-minded organizations including, OCO, LavaMae, and The Interfaith Council of Alameda. Our current focus is around how we can work toward impacting the housing crisis in our community.
