Wildlife in the City

We are very fortunate to live in a city with abundant wildlife. While Vancouver Parks offers habitat for birds, amphibians, marine life and mammals, it takes a team to protect and enhance these valuable biodiversity hot spots.  The team includes Vancouver Park Board and City staff, Federal, Provincial, Regional, and First Nation governments and most importantly you, the Park Stewards.  Here are some project highlights from wildlife protection projects in Vancouver Parks.
yd2
BIRDS:
Migratory birds are protected under the Species at Risk Act and the International Migratory Bird Treaty. These are administered by the Canadian Wildlife Service of Environment Canada.

The Stanley Park Ecology Society (SPES) plays an important role in monitoring and protecting herons and eagles in Vancouver’s largest park.  They also are leaders in public education on a variety of environmental conservation topics and are the current coordinators of Bird Week!  A big thank you to SPES staff for your leadership and community building around birds and so much more!

To support the resident Bald Eagle populations, Vancouver Park staff  are working to install a permanent eagle nesting pole in Vanier Park.  Visit our website to learn more and to share your thoughts on this project:

FISH AND MARINE LIFE:
This spring, we saw increased herring spawn in False Creek, thanks to the efforts of the Squamish Streamkeepers who have been running a forage fish project in the area for the past few years.  You can learn more about this project through this short interview with the project coordinator.

Through the dedication of the Musqueam Nation and local community groups over the past few decades we have seen the return of salmon to three streams in Vancouver; Musqueam, Spanish Banks and Still Creek.  Learn more about these amazing projects on their websites:
Musqueam Aquatic Habitat Restoration
Squamish Streamkeepers
Spanish Banks Streamkeepers
Still Creek Streamkeepers
Lastly, the Tsleil-Waututh Nation has taken a lead in bringing organizations together to improve the environmental health and integrity of Burrard Inlet by 2025.  The Burrard Inlet Action Plan proposed six priority actions:
1.   Update Water Quality Objectives for Burrard Inlet
2.   Install Scientific Instruments to Monitor Water Quality in Burrard Inlet
3.   Characterize and Reduce Pollution from Storm water Runoff
4.   Map Nearshore Habitats and Forage Fish Spawning Beaches
5.   Conserve Critical Nearshore Habitat Complexes
6.   Recover Shellfish Beds

Urban agriculture creates vibrant gathering spaces, greens the environment, supports local food resiliency and promotes social inclusion. There are many spaces in Vancouver that could be ideal for urban agriculture. To better support and enable urban agriculture, we are asking you to share your ideas to help identify potential new  locations to prioritize garden and food growing initiatives for 2020.

Community groups or individuals interested in starting new urban agriculture initiatives can submit an expression of interest.
