Japanese beetle (Popillia japonica), an invasive and regulated plant pest in Canada, has been found in the False Creek area. They have potential to do a lot of damage to our local vegetation; their larvae feed on the roots of lawns and other plants and the adult beetles cause significant damage to flowers, foliage and fruit of more than 250 plant species, including roses, blueberries and grapevines.

An order has been issued for Vancouver from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to restrict plant and soil materials from outside
a movement-control zone. For a complete list of plant and soil material that can and cannot be moved visit
the CFIA website.
|
| |
|
|
Surveillance and Treatments City of Vancouver and the Vancouver Parks Board are treating approximately 70 hectares of park and public land. This includes all lawns within a 200 metre buffer zone around where the beetle was trapped by CFIA in 2018.

Disposal Rules Starting June 15 until October 15 plants and above ground plant parts, such as grass clippings, pruning waste and branches with leaves attached cannot be moved outside the regulated area. This includes all outdoor plants, plant parts free from soil and green plant waste. As much as possible, these materials should be mulched in place or composted within the regulated area. Plant waste such as, pruning waste, grass clippings, leaves, weeds, and spent flowers, can be disposed in the green bin as long as it is substantially free from soil. The City of Vancouver will be collecting all the green waste within the regulated area separately and bringing it to a
temporary transfer station for proper disposal (located at 301 W 1st Ave Vancouver).

How can you help? To help contain the spread and protect our local vegetation residents can do the following: - Report any insects that you suspect could be Japanese beetle to the CFIA by calling: 604-292-5742, emailing (with insect photos when possible)
cfia.wstjb-sj.acia@canada.ca or using
CFIA's online reporting form. - Leave the Japanese beetle traps alone over summer. Do not move or tamper with them so the beetles can be monitored. - Avoid moving soil, plants with soil, pruning waste and other plant debris as of June 15th until October 15th within or out of the ’zone‘ (it is illegal to move soil year-round). - Remove as many adult Japanese beetles as possible by hand and put them in soapy water to kill them. - Attract birds by installing a birdhouse. Questions? Phone 3-1-1 for questions about the treatment plan for public
land. ResourcesCanadian Food Inspection Agency
