Native Bee Society of BC Did you know that British Columbia is home to the highest bee diversity in all of Canada? In fact, two-thirds of all Canadian bee species are found in BC (totaling to nearly 600 different species to date) with biologists adding newly identified species to that list every year!
| Wild pollinators play a vital role in the pollination of most flowering plants, and thus provide an invaluable service for maintaining healthy environments and ecosystem stability. This province is also full of bee enthusiasts, who (before this summer) didn’t have a unifying organization to bring us together. Alas, there is now a central hub for anyone who is passionate about native pollinator conservation in British Columbia: the Native Bee Society of BC.
The Native Bee Society of BC was founded this summer (July 2019) by a diverse collective of bee experts and enthusiasts. Our main purpose is to protect and promote British Columbia’s native bees and other wild pollinators for their critical role in maintaining a healthy environment, and we hope to achieve that mission through a diverse and inclusive set of actions. We want to attract membership from people of varied backgrounds with an interest in pollinators, including artists, biologists, educators, and conservationists. We are united in drawing inspiration and nurturing connectedness to nature through the scientific and artistic study of our pollinators and their native habitats. As our society grows, we hope to lead and support many different pollinator-centric activities,
including scientific research, education and outreach, citizen science, art, and conservation actions such as habitat restoration projects. We are interested in engaging our members in the exploration of the importance, biodiversity, and function of native bees throughout British Columbia. Our intention is to offer education and expertise to diverse audiences- from hosting events to share the wonderful world of native bees with newcomers, to offering advice to those already performing pollinator-supportive actions and activities around the province.
