Passing of Joseph Lin

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Joseph Lin, the founding president of  Green Club.  Over the past 20 years Joseph has offered environmental education with the Taiwanese and Mandarin speaking communities in Metro Vancouver to promote cross-cultural understanding of local ecosystems, educate the public about the importance of conservation, and advance a healthy way of living through walking in nature.  The Green Club has offered countless Community Healthy Walks and Nature Walks in many Vancouver parks and golfing greens.  Joseph, and his enthusiasm for sharing his love for nature, will be dearly missed by Vancouver Park staff and program participants.

Cool'Hood Champs Program (submitted)
Authors: Cheryl Ng, Cindy Zhaohua Cheng, Dr. Stephen Sheppard, Kanchi Dave, and Kim Walton
Collaborative for Advanced Landscape Planning, University of British Columbia
Full Image
Uncertainty, denial, pessimism. These are the words commonly associated with climate change today, especially when news headlines are often packed with devastating stories about wildfires, heat stress, and other related disasters across the world. How can we turn the conversation around, to include messages of hope for the future instead? How can we bring climate change and its solutions down to the local level where people care the most? Finally, how can we encourage friends & neighbours to take collective action against one of humanity‘s most pressing problems?

These are the questions that the Collaborative for Advanced Landscape Planning (CALP), a research unit led by Dr. Stephen Sheppard at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, Canada), hopes to answer. Through its Cool ’Hood Champs program developed in 2019, CALP aims to support community-led urban greening projects in order to build engaged, low-carbon, resilient and healthy neighbourhoods. The Cool ’Hood Champs program will recruit, train, and empower local champions using the Citizen‘s Coolkit – a visual and fun step-by-step toolkit developed by CALP for neighbours and friends to engage one another on issues and solutions related to urban forestry and climate change.

yd2
Participants of the Cool ’Hood Champs program will have the opportunity to try an array of interactive mapping and visualization activities in the Citizen‘s Coolkit, specially tailored for block-level climate action. For example, the Urban Forest Quest enables participants to estimate their canopy cover in the neighbourhood through an engaging outdoor walk. Through the program, champions will learn more about their neighbourhood and know how to engage their neighbours, local government, and support organizations in local green projects such as tree-planting and community gardening.

Photo: Urban Forest Quest
Cool ’Hood Champs will first be piloted in the Killarney neighbourhood for Spring 2020, with support from the Vancouver Park Board‘s Neighbourhood Matching Fund and representatives from Killarney, Champlain Heights and Hasting-Sunrise Community Associations. It will be offered as a choice between a series of three workshops or a one-day workshop, leading to a celebratory local tree planting event during the Earth Week in April.

CALP plans to expand this program across more neighbourhoods and establish a collaborative network of schools and community hubs in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, partnering with municipal staff, community organizations, schools, and libraries, where neighbourhood champions, teachers, high schoolers, and parents can be active collectively in urban greening, stewardship and climate action. Such engagement programs can contribute to building more resilient communities, reducing air-conditioning needs etc., in line with cities‘ canopy targets, carbon emission reduction targets, and adaptation strategies.

Interested in attending the workshops or learning more about the Program? Please contact Cheryl at cheryl.ng@ubc.ca

Description

This Indigenous-led project focuses on developing a community process for promoting understanding of the land around us and in our communities. We work together to build capacity for Indigenous communities to learn and practice land-based teachings.

All community members, including non-Indigenous neighbours, are welcome to join in. Together we explore knowledge to integrate actionable steps that can make social ecosystems and infrastructure work for urban Indigenous families and community members.
