Over 1,500 Participants ready for the 2020 BC Winter Games

The Fort St. John 2020 BC Winter Games kick off on February 20 and over 1,000 of BC’s best emerging high performance talents have registered and are ready to be part of this celebration of sport and community.

The over 1,000 athletes are from every corner of the province and have trained to earn a place to represent their Zone at the Games. Competing in 15 different sports, the athletes are an average of 14 years old and for most, this will be their first experience at a multi-sport Games. Special Olympics athletes will compete in speed skating and figure skating and athletes with a disability will compete in skiing-cross country and basketball-wheelchair.

G2G Sessions Open for BC Winter Games

Guide to the Games (G2G) Sessions, which provide an overview of what to expect at the Games, will be taking place from February 4 to 12, 2020, in various communities across the province. The sessions are open to athletes, coaches, officials, and parents, free of charge. G2G Sessions aim to increase understanding of the Games, explore ways athletes can gain the full benefit from their Games experience, and provide information and tools to prepare for the Games. 

"The session was very helpful for me as a parent as I had no info to that point,” the parent of a participant said of the sessions. “It was good to meet with organizers and clarify info."

Space is limited and registration is required. Online webinar sessions are also available to any participants who cannot attend an in-person session.

Coast Capital Savings Leadership Bursary Open for Winter Games

The BC Summer Games are a celebration of British Columbia’s sport and community. Since 1978, the BC Games have taken place in 38 communities and involved over 350,000 participants and volunteers and thousands more as spectators and supporters.

As the city gears up for the Maple Ridge 2020 BC Summer Games, the local organizing committee is looking for volunteers to get involved! Thousands of volunteers will be required from July 23-26 in a variety of areas. Volunteer roles include medal presenters, set-up and tear down, drivers, social media specialists, writers, food services support, IT specialists, security personnel and much more.

With the 2020 BC Winter Games fast approaching, we want to learn more about the participants who will be competing at the Games and their unique journey as an athlete.

viaSport Coach Mentorship Program Open for Summer Games

The BC Games Coach Mentorship Program is a partnership between viaSport and the BC Games Society. It is designed to support the development of key mentors within sports, thereby increasing the current capacity of sport leaders in B.C. 

Applications for the 2020 BC Summer Games Coach Mentorship Program will be accepted until February 9, 2020. Please see the Program Guidelines for more information, and contact coaches@viasport.ca with questions.

Coast Capital Leadership Bursary Open for Winter Games

The BC Games Society and Coast Capital Savings are supporting the development of young athletes, coaches, and officials through the Coast Capital Savings Leadership Bursary.

The bursary recognizes athletes who have achieved in sport and education but more importantly, go above and beyond in their communities through leadership and volunteer activities. Youth coaches and officials (under 19 years of age) who are attending the Games as part of a development opportunity are also welcome to apply. Apply by February 6, 2020.

Whiskey Jack Nordic Ski Club Prepares for the Games

The Whiskey Jack Nordic Ski Club is getting ready to host the cross-country skiing event in the Fort St. John BC Winter Games from February 20-23, 2020. The club is developing plans for a day lodge and has developed a stadium area in preparation for the competitions and was the recipient of funding through the BC Games Society‘s Powering Potential Fund. The Powering Potential Fund invests in projects that further the development of athletes, teams, sport organizations and communities to reach their full potential in sport.
