Teachers Support Soon-to-Graduate Students Amidst Pandemic

Teachers at Royal Bay Secondary School in Victoria have devised a strong continuity of learning plan to ensure the COVID-19 pandemic does not hinder the post-secondary plans of their grade 12 students. The plan includes ongoing communication between students, parents and post-secondary institutions, and the use of Google Classroom. Keisha Huchzermyer, a grade 12 student at the high school, received a scholarship to attend UVIC in September. Keisha explains that while there was initially some anxiety and uncertainty about what the last semester of high school would look like for her and her classmates, the school staff managed to ease the transition to an online learning model to support student success. “I have to say thank you to all the teachers and counsellors for being supportive, and guiding us through this trying time. I appreciate all the extra time they have spent setting up the new style of classrooms and connecting us all together,” says Keisha.

Relentless in the pursuit of her education, and with the devotion and support of her teachers, parents and post-secondary institution, Keisha will be able to attend UVIC in September and follow her dream of becoming a lawyer.
Educators all across the province are going the extra mile to support students like Keisha fulfill their dreams despite the challenges brought on by remote learning.
