Diversity and Multiculturalism Resources for Your Classroom

The recent death of George Floyd and the protests taking place in the United States and around the world demonstrate the critical importance of teaching students about diversity, multiculturalism and minority rights. Fortunately, in B.C. there are several resources available to you to address these important topics in your classroom.

The B.C. Social Studies curriculum, as well as elective courses such as Social Justice 12, allow students to develop a deep understanding of our society in all its diversity and complexity, and explore the rights and responsibilities of Canadian citizens. Some school districts – such as SD 64 (Gulf Islands) and SD 61 (Greater Victoria) – even offer their own courses and activities on local Black history.

The Province’s erase website is another very useful resource. erase promotes inclusion and supports the diversity of all B.C. students through activities such as providing training for educators, community partners and parents on topics related to student health and wellness.

If you're interested in more information about B.C. Black History make sure to visit the BC Black History Awareness Society website for resources and background information.

The Ministry continues to work with key community partners to raise awareness of these issues and ensure all B.C. students are aware of important topics in Black history. When we gain greater knowledge of and respect for the stories of our past, we strengthen ourselves, our communities and our shared future.
