Today British Columbians mark National Indigenous Peoples Day by recognizing the rich, diverse and unique culture and heritage of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples. Indigenous peoples have lived here since time immemorial; today we honour and show respect for the rights that are inherent in this history. We celebrate the significant contributions Indigenous peoples have made to the social, cultural and economic prosperity of B.C. This includes collaboration on initiatives such as revenue sharing, affordable housing, language revitalization and
the
United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
There are plenty of resources available for teachers this year, from learning
the
Heqeminem language, to
teaching strategies for Grades 10-12. One professional development opportunity is the
Continuing Our Learning Journey: Indigenous Education in B.C. These modules highlight the authentic Indigenous knowledge, perspectives and content in B.C.'s redesigned curriculum. As you and your students consider Indigenous cultures, make sure to explore these resources from the
Siwal Si'wes Library and the
Indigenous Education Resource Inventory.
