COVID Alert App

COVID Alert is an exposure notification app that uses Bluetooth to exchange random codes with nearby phones. Every day, it checks a list of random codes from people who tell the app they tested positive. If you've been near one of those codes in the past 14 days, you'll get a notification. Nobody will get any personal information about you or the time you were near them.

Mental Health of Immigrants & Refugees

Results from this study from Statistics Canada show that among immigrants, self-reported mental health status varies based on region of origin and amount of time in Canada, even after controlling for socio-economic and demographic factors. Immigrants who arrived within 10 years of the survey, for example, were more likely to report high levels of self-reported mental health, while those who had been in Canada for 10 years or more reported lower levels of mental health, similar to their Canadian-born counterparts.

Exploring Resilience: Studies on Newcomer Youth

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted young people particularly hard. Unemployment rate for youth (15 to 24 year-olds) rose from 10.3% in February to a historical high of 29.4% in May.This study shows that this could have long-term ramifications for class of 2020 high school and post-secondary graduates as they enter the labour market.

A recent study of Calgarian newcomer youth show that they face some of these same issues with heightened vulnerability, often with a lower level of visibility or opportunity to reap the benefits bestowed by immigration policies or federally-funded programming. Several gaps within these parameters have been identified in the full report here

Another study on youth attending colleges in Toronto explores students‘ resilience and asks about settlement challenges & services used to overcome them. Learn more about it here.

Checking in with kindness

Since isolation plans became mandatory for international arrivals to B.C., Service BC employees have made more than 8,500 phone calls to temporary foreign workers, providing information and making referrals for any needed supports. There have also been over 51,000 calls as of July, confirming that self-isolation plans are being followed. According to this article, many people contacted have welcomed the human connection with Service BC employees, saying that being able to talk with someone has helped them feel safe and comfortable, and the service calls have reinforced that someone cares.
