It is so good to have everyone back. We missed y'all!! We hope you had an amazing break and was at least 52% productive. 

New Members: Welcome to the team!! You made it through the long process and came out on top. You are going to be great! Don't be too nervous, we are all here for you.

Attendance Policy

If you have to miss a Saturday for any reason, you are required to make up the work from each class on Canvas. You will need to complete each classes' work by the following Wednesday at 11:59 PM. If you do not have access to the Internet please inform a staff member immediately. If you are absent for more than 5 Saturdays we will talk about exiting you from the program.

Communication

If you are going to be absent, text, call in, or email staff members.  Do not wait until Saturday afternoon to communicate your absence.  Also, be respectful of UB staff; do not text or call after 10 pm or before 7 am.

AL NEUHARTH FREE SPIRIT AND JOURNALISM CONFERENCE

The annual Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference program targets rising high school seniors who are interested in pursuing a career in journalism and who demonstrate qualities of “free spirit.” The purpose of the Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference is to promote the vital role of the First Amendment as a cornerstone of democracy and to inspire students to pursue journalism careers.

Students will participate in a virtual conference June 21-24 and are awarded a $1,000 college scholarship. This Freedom Forum Institute program was established in 1999 to honor Al Neuharth, the founder of USA Today, Newseum and the Freedom Forum. The conference is designed to inspire and encourage students to pursue journalism.

Eligibility 

1. You must be a high school junior who will graduate in the Class of 2022.
2. You must be interested in pursuing a career in journalism.
3. You must demonstrate the qualities of a “free spirit.”
4. You must be available to attend the virtual conference June 21-24, 2021.

Submission

1. Two letters of recommendation 
2. Three journalistic work samples (written, online, or audio/video)
3. Two essays: maximum of 500 words each 
- Essay one: The essay must explain why the applicant wants to pursue a career in journalism. - - Essay two: This essay should be about the applicant‘s specific qualities as a free spirit.

This new section will be used to highlight the wide range of careers out there because not everyone wants or should be a doctor, lawyer, athlete, or all the other careers that are always discussed. 

Speech-Language Pathologists

Speech-language pathologists work with children and adults who have problems with speech and language, including related cognitive or social communication problems. They may be unable to speak at all, or they may speak with difficulty or have rhythm and fluency problems, such as stuttering. Speech-language pathologists may work with people who are unable to understand language or with those who have voice disorders, such as inappropriate pitch or a harsh voice.

Speech-language pathologists typically do the following:
- Evaluate  levels of speech, language, or swallowing difficulty
 - Identify treatment options
 - Create and carry out an individualized treatment plan that addresses  specific functional needs
 - Teach children and adults how to make sounds and improve their voices and maintain fluency
 - Help individuals improve vocabulary and sentence structure used in oral and written language
 - Work with children and adults to develop and strengthen the muscles used to swallow
 - Counsel individuals and families on how to cope with communication and swallowing disorders

Some speech-language pathologists specialize in working with specific age groups, such as children or the elderly. Others focus on treatment programs for specific communication or swallowing problems, such as those resulting from strokes, trauma, or a cleft palate.

Work Schedules

Most speech-language pathologists work full time. Some speech-language pathologists, such as those working for schools, may need to travel between different schools or facilities.

Growing Occupation

Speech-language pathologists ranked 15 out of 20 on the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' Fastest Growing Occupations list. The occupation is forecasted to grow 25% between 2019-2029, showing need for these students.

Education 

Degree: Master's from an accredited program

Licenses: Texas residents need a licenses to work 

Certification: Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology 

Necessary Qualities* 

Analytical skills. Speech-language pathologists must select the most appropriate diagnostic tools and analyze results to arrive at an accurate diagnosis and develop an appropriate treatment plan.

Communication skills. Speech-language pathologists need to communicate test results, diagnoses, and proposed treatments in a way that individuals and their families can understand.

Compassion. Speech-language pathologists work with people who are often frustrated by their difficulties. Speech-language pathologists must support emotionally demanding individuals and their families.

Critical-thinking skills. Speech-language pathologists must adjust their treatment plans as needed, finding alternative ways to help.

Detail-oriented. Speech-language pathologists must take detailed notes on progress and treatment.

The median annual wage for speech-language pathologists was $79,120 in May 2019.

In May 2019, the median annual wages for speech-language pathologists in the top industries in which they worked were as follows:
 - Nursing and residential care facilities - $95,250

 - Hospitals; state, local, and private - $85,420

 - Offices of physical, occupational, and speech therapists, and audiologists - $83,550

 - Educational services - $70,290
