Educators foster a curiosity that leads them to seek ways to extend not only children’s learning but also their own. Educators do not see themselves as holding the “right” knowledge of pedagogy and practice. Rather, they are learners as well as educators, continually reflecting, examining practices, and making intentional choices. Educators collaborate with children, families and colleagues as partners in learning - continually observing, listening, and experimenting with an openness to the unexpected, in order to create the conditions for children to thrive (Early Learning Framework, p.18)

We do not learn from experience. We learn from reflecting on experience – John Dewey (1933). The Brock University article, Role of Reflection, shares how reflection is used to enhance student learning in courses they offer. Reading this article while thinking of ourselves as “students” can remind us of the value of approaching our work each day from the perspective of educator as learner and the impact a reflective practice can have on the way in which we teach and interact with our students. Reflection is a central feature of experiential education and serves the function of solidifying connection between what a student experienced and the meaning/learning that they derived from that experience (Denton, 2011). We stand to deepen our understanding of and learn from daily experiences when we adopt a reflective practice.

| There is much research and evidence to support engaging in a reflective practice as a powerful means to learning. There are certain aspects that maximize the learning potential through a reflective practice such as being intentional and explicit in our practice, and reflecting collaboratively with others. The podcast, The Power of Reflection in Learning and Leading, highlights the why behind a reflective practice, along with some insights around the how and the connection between self-reflection and self-efficacy.

The video, "What, So what, Now what?," offers a look at a simple model of reflective practice that effectively hones in on an event or experience to support going deeper into our understanding of it and planning a response or strategy for moving forward to try again by trying differently.
