Applying the Standards for B.C. Educators

B.C. has one of the best education systems in the world, and the hard work and commitment of educators to support student success are key to that achievement. Guided by the Standards for B.C. Educators established by the BC Teachers' Council and the Independent School Teaching Certificate Standards Committee, certificate holders ensure students have a safe and nurturing environment in which to learn.

Unfortunately, a small number of certificate holders breach these standards. And when that happens, B.C.'s Commissioner for Teacher Regulation comes in. The Commissioner oversees the process by which reports or complaints about the conduct or competence of certificate holders are addressed.

Beginning with this issue of Learn, and on a quarterly basis, we will share anonymized summaries of recent discipline outcomes. In doing so, our intention is to show how the standards are interpreted and applied. A better understanding of the standards to which all certificate holders are held accountable contributes to maintaining the high quality of our education system.

More details about any particular outcome or decision can be found on the Discipline Outcomes web page.
