Inspiring Youth from Underrepresented Groups to Pursue a Career in Tech  

Launched in June 2019, the Diversity and Inclusion Tech Project aims to give underrepresented youth (e.g., women, Indigenous peoples, people with disabilities) the opportunity to see themselves in rewarding careers they may not otherwise know existed, or that might be aligned with their passions.
 
Central to the Diversity and Inclusion Tech Project is the Everyone Belongs in Tech video series. Each video showcases an individual from an underrepresented population who has embarked on a rewarding career in the tech sector. This includes Katherine Shadwick, a Software Quality Analyst for a major B.C. financial institution, who was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder in high school. Harley Knife, a young Cree man who works as a Senior Animator for a Kelowna-based animation company, is also profiled.
 
This project is funded through the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Training‘s Sector Labour Market Partnerships program. We invite you to share these videos with your students so they can see for themselves that a career in tech is open to everyone, regardless of their background.
