Truth and Reconciliation Week Events

For the week of September 27 to October 1, The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation is putting on an online event in the hope of continuing the recent conversations about the truth of the Indigenous treaties, First Nation, Métis and Inuit land claims, and the residential schools system. This online event will be open to youth in Grades 5-12, at all Canadian schools, and will involve workshops, exclusive video content, and activities for students.

Party in the Square: Celebrate Canada's Diversity

Join us for the Party in the Square Celebration of Canada's diversity in downtown Port Coquitlam on September 4th. Drop by Leigh Square from 2pm to 6pm for a celebration of Canada's diverse cultures, featuring live performances, children's activities, displays, and food and beverages. Performances include those of Indigenous hoop dancer Alex Wells, Persian music and dance, AC/DC tribute band Bonnie Scott, pop/R&B duo KokoSoul, and Afro-Cuban dance grooves with the Fito Garcia Band. All activities will comply with current orders from the Provincial Health Officer. 

 

 

 

Support for Afghan-Canadians and Refugees

There are two events being put on in September to offer support to Afghans, both within Canada and those making dangerous journeys as refugees. 
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) | On August 27, IRCC provided an update regarding how to sponsor family members from Afghanistan. Included in this update is information about priority processing, waiving fees and other requirements, and how they are processing existing files.

Active Witnessing (Bystander) Webinar

Join S.U.C.C.E.S.S's webinar to learn the tools that will equip and empower you to shift from being a passive witness to an active witness. Learn about the bystander effect, the four levels of witnessing, and effective words and actions that you can put into practice.

September 20 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm | This group is designed by MOSAIC to support the unique needs of trans, non-binary, and gender diverse immigrants, refugees, and other newcomers to Canada. It will be held over Zoom and provides a safe space to share stories, feedback, and ideas about information related to transitioning, housing, employment, and experiences.

This is a series of four free workshops, put on by the DMSI Project at Refugee 613, and is designed to take settlement practitioners through the steps of establishing digital messaging to connect the newcomers in your community with the information and services they need to thrive. Immigrant and Refugee Mental Health Fall Course

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) | September 27 - November 8.
This course offers evidence-based information, tools and resources for service providers to provide mental health care and support to both immigrants and refugees arriving in Canada. This includes overview on the social determinants of health and its impact on mental health, the role of migration trajectories and highlights the specific needs of sub populations. For more information and registration click here.

Virtual Information Session – Career Paths for Skilled Immigrants Program

MOSAIC is offering an online program for skilled immigrants on September 16 (Thurs) from 10am to 12 pm.  Learn about practicum and employment opportunities and get access to career coaching and job search assistance, license processes, and skills upgrading. 



Care Aide Registration for IEHPs

Are you an internationally educated healthcare professional who is interested in gaining care aide registration? If so, this information session that Douglas College would be a good event to attend. Through this Zoom information session, that will be held on Thursday, September 16 from 5:00-6:00pm, you will gain exposure to the Canadian Healthcare system, immerse yourself in Canadian work culture, and better understand the scope of practice for the profession in Canada. Pathways to gaining registration, as well as the supports you can access along the way, will also be discussed. 

Education & Social Services Information Session

Are you an internationally educated trained professional from the following occupations: Social and Community Service Worker; University, College and Vocational Instructor; and Early Childhood Educator or ECE Teaching Assistant? If so, this information session that Douglas College would be a good event to attend. This Zoom information session, that will be held on Monday, September 20 from 10:00-11:00am, will provide attendees with valuable tools and resources to understand and successfully navigate the labour market to help launch their careers. Furthermore, it will provide an overview of all the specialized services available to clients.

Are you someone who wants to help eliminate discrimination and promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in Port Coquitlam? For this Roundtable, the City is seeking volunteers who represent a broad range of under-served and equity-seeking groups including Indigenous, Black, people of colour, LGBT2SQ+ and gender diverse people, and immigrants and newcomers. If this sounds like something you want to do, then apply. Those interested in a one-year term may apply online at portcoquitlam.ca/edi by noon Sept. 7. Reforming the Police Act

The Special Committee on Reforming the Police Act has opened the next phase of their consultation and is accepting input from individuals about their experiences and perspectives with respect to policing and public safety in BC.  British Columbians can share their input by completing a survey. The survey will remain open until Friday, September 3 at 5:00 p.m. (PST)
