We are really excited to be back together for this new school year, and hope that you are feeling rejuvenated and inspired as you continue your invaluable work with students, colleagues, and families. As a collective, we will have many ways to collaborate and learn together throughout this year. To begin we are highlighting Elena Aguilar's book "Onward - Cultivating Resilience in Educators" as a collaborative focus for School Based Teams (SBTs) to dive into, with hopes that this will be an opportunity to honour and move forward with the hard work we do together. #bettertogether

| Children who develop resilience are better equipped to learn from failure and adapt to change. Teachers should also address parent expectations of success and failure.

A daring classroom is a place where both teachers and students commit to choosing courage over comfort, choosing what is right over what is fun, fast or easy and practicing values rather than professing them.

This year we are excited to have the opportunity to bring together SD61 LSTs and Counsellors to engage in a book study using Elena Aguilar‘s book, Onward: Cultivating Emotional Resilience in Educators. Both the book and the Onward website are dedicated to helping people: - cultivate resilience - uncover their true selves - better understand their emotions - use their energy where it counts - adopt a mindful, story-telling approach to communication and community building - create an environment of collective celebration
The book is organized by months and September begins at Chapter 4, “Build Community.” We will have time together at each of our LST-Counsellor Collab meetings to dive into this book study.

| Onward Sneak Peak
We are social beings and we need each other to thrive. A strong, healthy community can bolster us through challenging moments and bring joy to our lives. When we build community, we can build empathy for each other, and building empathy for each other helps us build community. During this month when we’re surrounded by new people, building strong relationships must be our primary goal. The community we build is foundational for our resilience. (Aguilar, 2018)

What resonated for you as you read Chapter 4: Build Community?
How are you inspired to strengthen your community?
What insights or self-awareness did you gain as you read?
Beyond our own LST-Counsellor Collaborative meetings, consider discussing each chapter or exploring the exercises in the workbook at your staff or SBT meetings.

Approximately 1 in 5 youth worldwide will experience a mental illness before they turn 25. Schools are the ideal place to build resilience and address mental health literacy. This resource has been developed for grades 8-12 as adolescence (Ages 12-19) is a critical time for mental health promotion, prevention, early identification, and intervention.
