SEL has a powerful combination of evidence and support. The findings ... from multiple fields and sources ... include analyses of hundreds of studies that show SEL leads to beneficial outcomes related to: social and emotional skills; attitudes about self, school, and social topics; social behaviors; conduct problems; emotional distress; and academic performance
( CASEL). The Ministry of Education embraces SEL in the context of promotion, prevention, and intervention, and we know that SEL acts as a protective factor in our mental health.
|
|
|
SEL is included as a focus in our own
District Strategic Plan (2020-2025) and integral to BC‘s Curricular Competencies. Further, it clearly aligns with the First Peoples Principles of Learning. All of these things aside, and perhaps most notably, SEL works and it is profoundly impactful. If Canadian based research is your thing, check out Stuart Shanker‘s domain paper,
Social-emotional learning: Measuring What Matters where he shares evidence “demonstrating that an education that promotes SEL yields positive results for students, adults, and school communities.”

Help Families and Staff Build Resilience During the COVID 19 Outbreak Resilience is not something we’re born with—it’s built over time as the experiences we have interact with our unique, individual genetic makeup. That’s why we all respond to stress and adversity—like that from the COVID-19 pandemic—differently.

We are Built to be Kind Human nature is often portrayed as selfish and #power hungry, but research by Dacher Keltner (UC Berkeley, Co-Director of the Greater Good Science Center) finds that we are hard-wired to be kind.

| Welcoming Students with a Smile Research shows that greeting each student at the door with a positive message brings benefits for both students and teacher. The strategy is pretty easy: i. Say the student‘s name ii. Make eye contact iii. Use a friendly nonverbal greeting, such as a handshake, high five, or thumbs-up iv. Give a few words of encouragement v. Ask how their day is going

November - Take Care of Yourself (Chapter 6) Habit: Take Care of Yourself Disposition: Positive Self-Perception
Physical self-care and well-being are foundational for many other habits. When your body is cared for, you‘re better able to deal with emotions. Resilient people have a healthy self-perception, are committed to taking care of themselves, and accept themselves more or less as they are. (Aguilar, 2018, p 147)
