Helpful Tips for Your Essay

1. A paragraph typically consists of at least three sentences, however, it might be better to add a little more. Say more, not less.
2. Be sure you or someone you trust reads over your work after you are finished.
3. Allow your word processor program to do a spell- and grammar check. (Grammarly is a great program to have on your computer for this as well.)
4. Address each question in your essay, even if you feel you do not have much to say on that topic.
5. For question three, think about what you do best. Are you a very social person? If so, you could be great at talking about the program to your peers or underclassmen.
6. Be sure you follow the font instructions. A lot of word processor programs do not default to the requested font so you will need to change it before submitting/printing your paper.
7. If you need help do not be afraid/nervous to ask the staff or current students!

Bring a Friend

If you have a friend that is interested in the program but did not attend the informational presentation at your high school, bring them! Students do not have to attend the presentation to come to the Saturday meetings. Saturday Meetings are open to any and every student that is interested in TRIO Upward Bound.

Helpful Tips to Standout

1. Talk to the members!
2. Participate in the activities.
3. Greet the staff or make small talk with them. This helps you make a positive impact on the staff so they remember who you are.
4. When it comes to peer interviews, take those interviews seriously. This is when students really form opinions.
5. Follow instructions even if it means you may be split up from your friends. It's important that the staff see that you are okay getting out of your comfort zone.

Eligibility Verification for Application

In your application packet, you received a document called "Eligibility Verification". This form, asks your parents to write their Taxable Income. This information can be found from their tax return on Form 1040 (shown above). This is not how much money your parents make a year! If your parents are unsure please feel free to share our email or phone number so they can contact us! Or, we can help answer this when they come to the Parent Meeting in November.
