Happy New Year!

We  wrote the intro to this Newsletter in December and it was a message with a great deal of hope for in person connection and moving beyond COVID.  Oh the hubris!

Once again, we join you all in finding resilience, reaching for connection and  modelling kindness to ourselves and others.  Good luck over the next few weeks, and we continue to be available for support, debriefing and problem solving.

January - Cultivate Compassion (Chapter 8)

Habit:  Cultivate Compassion                      Disposition: Perspective
Start the new year by strengthening your compassion for yourself and others, and unlock another resource for resilience:
Compassion for ourselves, as well as for others, helps us deal with the interpersonal challenges we face on a daily basis. Perspective allows us to recognize the complexity of a situation. Perspective allows us to empathize with others, see the long view, extricate ourselves from the drama of a moment, and identify a wider range of responses to an event.
Chapter Reflection:
What connections did you make to the ideas raised in this chapter?
How might your life be different if you increased compassion for yourself and others?
Of the ideas presented in this chapter, which do you want to further explore?

U of C Study on the self-reported mental health needs of students during COVID-19 (link in title)

Dr. Kelly Dean Schwartz (Associate professor in school and applied psychology) at the University of Calgary, and his team conducted a study focusing upon the following question:  “What are the self-reported mental health needs and resiliency indicators of students returning to school amidst COVID-19?”  Over 1,500 Alberta students ages 12-18 from multiple school divisions completed an online survey at separate times (September and December 2020, March and June 2021) about COVID-19 concerns, their levels of stress, behavioural and adaptive functioning and resiliency.

Joanne Mitchell - District Indigenous Counsellor

As District Indigenous Counsellor,  Joanne is passionate about incorporating authentic learning about Indigenous issues into our schools. She feels it is important to understand a full spectrum of Indigenous perspectives: the history of Indigenous dispossession and trauma; the strength and resiliency of the culture; and, to present the beauty and intricacies of Indigenous worldview. With other members of her team, she strives to wrap our children in the protection of cultural strength and identity, and inform a new generation of learners about the importance of Truth and Reconciliation. The Indigenous team is here to create a vision for our district to move towards reconciliation by providing guidance and support to public educators to seek out authentic voices, unpack colonial theories, and find the confidence to move forward in our vision where reconciliation can be felt both personally and professionally.
