Landscape Architect

Landscape architects design attractive and functional public parks, gardens, playgrounds, residential areas, college campuses, and public spaces. They also plan the locations of buildings, roads, walkways, flowers, shrubs, and trees within these environments. Landscape architects design these areas so that they are not only easy to use but also harmonious with the natural environment.

Landscape architects use various technologies in their work. For example, using CADD software, landscape architects prepare models of their proposed work. They present these models to clients for feedback and then prepare the final look of the project. Many landscape architects also use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) which offer GPS coordinates of different geographical features. This helps landscape architects design different environments by providing clues on where to start planning and how to anticipate future effects of the landscape, such as rainfall running into a valley.

The goals of landscape architects are to enhance the natural beauty of a space and foster environmental benefits. Landscape architects may plan the restoration of natural places that were changed by humans or nature, such as wetlands, streams, and mined areas. They also may design green roofs (roofs that are covered in soil and plants) or rooftop gardens that can retain storm water, absorb air pollution, and cool buildings while also providing pleasant scenery.

Education Needed

Landscape architects typically need a bachelor's or master's degree in landscape architecture or a related field, such as architecture. There are two undergraduate landscape architect degrees: a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture (BLA) and a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture (BSLA). These programs usually require 4 to 5 years of study.

Courses typically include landscape design and construction, landscape ecology, and site design. Other relevant coursework may include history of landscape architecture, plant and soil science, and professional practice.

Duties

Landscape architects typically do the following:
 - Meet with clients, engineers, and building architects to understand the requirements of a project
 - Prepare site plans, specifications, and cost estimates
 - Coordinate the arrangement of existing and proposed land features and structures
 - Prepare graphic representations of plans using computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) software
 - Select appropriate landscaping materials
 - Analyze environmental reports on land conditions, such as drainage and energy usage
 - Inspect landscape project progress to ensure that it adheres to plans
 - Seek new work through marketing activities or by giving presentations.

Wages

The median annual wage for landscape architects was $70,630 in May 2020. The median wage is the wage at which half the workers in an occupation earned more than that amount and half earned less. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $42,500, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $115,660.

In May 2020, the median annual wages for landscape architects in the top industries in which they worked were as follows:
- Government- $91,560
 - Architectural, engineering, and related services - $72,550
 - Construction - $67,850
 - Administrative and support and waste management and remediation services - $59,190

SAT is going digital: Exam will be online-only, shorter as colleges ditch standardized tests

Put down the pencils and grab your laptop: The SAT, one of the nation‘s most commonly used college-entrance exams, is going digital.

The College Board, the organization that administers the SAT, PSAT and other standardized tests, announced the change Tuesday. The shift to online exams won't happen until 2024 for American students. International students will start testing virtually in 2023.

$415 million of federal loan money sent to students defrauded by DeVry, ITT Tech

Federal student loans worth $415 million will be repaid to nearly 16,000 students who were defrauded by for-profit universities, according to an announcement from the Department of Education on Wednesday.

These include students who attended DeVry University, Westwood College Employment Prospects, ITT Nursing and Minnesota School of Business/Globe University. The mechanism that students used is called a borrower defense to loan repayment, meaning the settlement would discharge some or all of their student loan obligations.

“Students count on their colleges to be truthful. Unfortunately, today‘s findings show too many instances in which students were misled into loans at institutions or programs that could not deliver what they‘d promised,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona in a release.

Congressional Democrats Target Bans on Teaching About Racism in Schools

Congressional Democrats didn't mince words when they sent a message this week to their GOP colleagues, Republican state leaders and conservative school board members mounting efforts to sanitize U.S. history by stripping teachings and banning books on divisive topics like race, racism and gender.

“It is our moral imperative to tell the truth about our past to finally reconcile with this nation‘s history of racism and white nationalism,” Rep. Jamaal Bowman, a New York Democrat and former teacher and principal, said in a statement announcing legislation aimed at protecting and promoting the teaching of African American history in K-12 schools.

“The moment we are in requires of us a clear-eyed vision to ensure that not just our children but people of all ages, have access to resources and education that accurately recount African American history,” he said. “As a Black man and an educator, I cannot make clear enough how important it is to the success of our democracy for us to come to a collective understanding and agreement that we must take our commitment to learn from our past seriously.”

City of Denton ordered to drop its mask mandate

DENTON, Texas - Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton threatened legal action against the city of Denton over its mask mandate. Denton recently extended its mask mandate through the end of March. The policy requires face masks inside daycares, schools, businesses, and city-owned facilities. While Denton ISD and most businesses don‘t enforce the mandate, the city does require its workers to wear masks in common areas while on the job.

Paxton sent a letter to Denton‘s interim city manager warning that the rule violates Gov. Greg Abbott‘s ban on mask mandates.
