International Women‘s Day Celebration

Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce. March 8th, 11:00 am - 1:30 pm. Westwood Plateau Golf & Country Club 3251 Plateau Boulevard, Coquitlam | International Women's Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. International Women‘s Day 2022 includes keynote speakers Robyn Chisholm (VP, Commercial Banking, Scotiabank) and Christine Mackenzie (First Nation Artist, Sneaky Native Art) as well as panelists Julia Chung (CEO, Spring Plans & Admin Slayer) and Armin Amrolia (Deputy City Manager, City of Vancouver). All attendees are required to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination for entry to indoor organized events. Please note that we will be checking photo ID and scanning the vaccine QR Code.

Free Income Tax Clinic

MOSAIC. March 1st, 1:00 pm - 9:00 pm. MOSAIC | Volunteers are providing virtual filing support for immigrants with modest incomes! To be eligible for MOSAIC's filing services: an individual must be a Permanent Resident or Protected Person, with a total Family Income below: 1 Individual: $ 35,000 | 2 Individuals: $ 45,000 + $ 2,500 for each additional household member (up to $52,500). Those who are not eligible include individuals who have business or rental income and expenses, overseas income, interest income over $1,000, capital gains or losses, those who are self-employed with a business license or expense deductions, a deceased person, those with disability claims, and those who have filed for bankruptcy.

Self-Care for Mental Health (Youth)

ISSofBC. March 26th, 11:30 am - 2:30 pm.  280 – 610 Sixth Street New Westminster | Join us for an engaging workshop facilitated by the Crisis Centre on the importance of taking care of our mental health!  Learn about the continuum of mental health, self-care, and the need for boundaries and limits and make new friends. Bi-weekly Women‘s Mutual Support Group

MOSAIC. March 7th from 10:00 am - 11:00 am | The Bi-weekly Women‘s Mutual Support Group is designed to support the unique needs of self-identified women who are with lived experience of violence/abuse. This group provides a safe space to share their stories and gain support. Our Bi-weekly Women‘s Mutual Support Group will be offered online via Zoom. Free Residential Emergency Preparedness Training

City of Port Coquitlam. March 5th from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm at Fire Hall #1 1725 Broadway, Port Coquitlam. An emergency can arise quickly and without warning. Residents should be prepared to be on their own for at least 72 hours in an emergency, be it a power outage, severe storm, flood, earthquake or other emergency. Port Coquitlam‘s Emergency Preparedness Program prepares civic employees, residents and businesses for the effects of a disaster or major emergency. The City has trained employees in emergency operations and personal family preparedness, and has obtained a variety of resources to assist the community in the event of an emergency. 

Indigenous Voices: An Evening of Poetry and Prose

Douglas College. March 3rd from 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm | Award-winning Indigenous author, Michelle Good, joins the sixth annual Indigenous Voices! She won the HarperCollins/UBC Best New Fiction Prize for her first novel, Five Little Indians, and will be talking about her works and sharing her writing process. 

 

 

 

Neurodiverse Parenting

Westcoast Family Centres (WFC). March 7th, 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm | Learning or suspecting that your child may have a cognitive challenge can be confusing and stressful? Join this support group for parents with neurodiverse chidren (ages 2-17). Neurological differences may include: ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), dyspraxia, dyslexia, brain damage, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), and learning difficulties. Your child does not need to have a diagnosis for you to participate in the group. WFC Parent Educator Kristy will provide information relating to: understating neurodiversity; tools and strategies that can support your child to function in day to day life; being an effective advocate for your child; appreciating the impact of neurodiversity on the whole family and how to support themselves, your other children and your relationship; and linking the group to support services within the community. Virtual Conversation: How to Interact with the Police

S.U.C.C.E.S.S. March 7th, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm (Mandarin) and March 16th, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm (English, Korean) | Do you know what you should and shouldn‘t do when you interact with a police officer? Join this dialogue session with a legal navigator from Justice Education Society and a police officer. You will learn about: your rights when interacting with the police, if you can remain silent or request to talk to a lawyer, what to do when you witness a suspicious activity, and what information to provide when you call the police. Free Online Conversation Circles

ISSofBC. Conversation circles are a great way to practice and improve your English language skills and make new connections. Join to: participate in weekly guided discussions, develop your speaking confidence, build your vocabulary, become familiar with Canadian Culture, and create social connections. First Aid Training for Refugee Claimants

MOSAIC. March 9th, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm. Location: MOSAIC, 5575 Boundary Road, Vancouver | First Aid Training is highly valued by Canadian employers in many industries and you will receive a First Aid level 1 certificate. Training in English. Lunch, bus tickets and face mask will be provided. Due to the safety restrictions, wearing mask is mandatory. AMSSATalk: Indigenous Leaders' Circle

March 2nd, 10:00 am - 12:30 pm | In this AMSSATalk, Indigenous Leaders will engage in a dialogue about truth, reconciliation, and decolonization. The purpose is for settlement providers to learn from the stewards of this land; to share, listen, and build relations by respectfully participating in a discussion and asking questions.  The Indigenous Leaders‘ Circle will continue the conversation on key themes including, Indigenous Worldview versus Colonized Worldview, the concept that we all have our own Indigeneity, intergenerational trauma and the inherited survivor spirit, and Decolonization. Katie Crocker, AMSSA‘s CEO, will facilitate a free-flowing discussion with four Indigenous Leaders, Norm Leech, Tabatha Frank, Lorelei Williams, and JB the First Lady.

Virtual Storytellers Lodge

IndigiNews. March 2nd and 3rd, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm | As a continuation to the previous series on decolonizing journalism, IndigiNews is now holding a special series. This special Decolonize the Media training series is co-hosted by IndigiNews and Your syilx Sisters Consulting. The training will include sessions focused on land-connected storytelling, trauma-informed reporting, decolonizing and Indigenizing the newsroom and allyship. Sessions will include discussions with presenters and attendees.

Beyond Pronouns: Creating Inclusive Classrooms for Queers of Colour

Simon Fraser University (SFU). March 2nd, 10:00 am – 11:30 am | This session will review the critical components to consider in creating a welcoming environment for LGBTQ2SIA+ and BIPOC students to feel safe to learn. It also explores the experiences of queer students of colour within education, reflect on our roles as educators to design learning environments where they can thrive, and explore practical and effective strategies to improve our practice with an eye toward anti-racism and SOGI (sexual orientation and gender identity)-inclusion.

Language Matters: Inclusive and Anti-Racist Writing Practices

March 9th, 10:00 am – 11:30 am | In this session we will collectively unpack (some of) the racist and exclusionary language practices in university classes, course descriptions, and syllabi, and identify and consider opportunities to actively take up inclusive and antiracist language in the classroom.

Heritage Week

Celebrate Heritage week with the Port Moody Station Museum. Venture out to the Ioco Townsite on February 27th from 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm to do their new walking tour and witness the unveiling of the signs for their new self guided walking tour.  Come to the event to talk about Ioco history and heritage advocacy over a cup of coffee. The Inlet United Church will be open and offers interested visitors short guided tours. More information can be found here.
