SUPPORTING ALL LEARNERS

Storytelling & Re-Storying

Stories stick with us. Winter is the season of cozying up and storytelling. Indigenous cultures across Canada honour the traditional knowledge that storytelling imparts; sharing our stories is abundant with benefits for our children, our communities, and ourselves. Leaning into stories allows us to rest, dream, learn, escape, become inspired, and restory. The practice of storytelling promotes social emotional wellbeing, can empower diverse learners, and connects us to ourselves and each other so that together we rise and grow.

Read on for academic and social emotional insights and connections through storytelling and re-storying.

“If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to people you can never even dream of. There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person."

READ: The Art of Storytelling: Encouraging and guiding students to tell their own stories promotes belonging, centers cultural and linguistic diversity, publicly values and integrates student stories across subject areas and fosters confident, self-directed learners.

TRYMultilingual and Dual  Language Storytelling: This is a project that starts out with a focus on narratives from a variety of voices and perspectives.  Then this is followed by students developing and perhaps translating their stories with the help of family.  Inter-generational sharing of stories is emphasized.  Tan Huynh shares Marta Garcia’s experience with this project and how to do it with our own students and schools.

DECEMBER SNASHOT TOPIC: Substance Use

District Based Information
  • Referral App Update: As of December 1st, the ‘draft’ mode will be removed. As soon as a case manager uploads an SLP or Psychologist referral document on the app, it will immediately be seen by the psychologist, SLP and/or Assessment Centre for approval and processing. Please contact Stephanie in the Assessment Centre with any questions.

  • CYMH C/C update: Save the dates  January 23, 27 and May 1, 2. Further information and supporting documents will be posted on the website and shared out in early January.

  • Designation compliance quality review clarification: We are no longer supporting provisional ASD designation requests for students on a VICAN/assessment waitlist. For the purposes of designation, a confirmed ASD diagnosis is required. A Q&A and opportunity for discussion about the designation quality review will be shared in the new year.

  • IBI Designations: The IBI designation process and supplemental resources are available on our Support for Learning website. Some key points to remember:
  1. New IBI designation requests and IBI renewal requests can be submitted at any point during the year via the District Referral App
  2. There are 3 key areas that must be documented: Medical Diagnosis (Assessment) + School Documentation + Community Agency
  3. See the IBI process flowcharts on the Support for Learning webpage as a reference
  4. Review of the progress (school documentation and shared planning) of students designated IBI is expected to the occur on a  yearly basis, whether the file is due for review or not

  • Now that our CB-IEP sessions are done, recorded and on our website in our CB-IEP Google Drive, they are accessible for all to re-watch with the use of the attached resources. In addition to our evolving and growing CB-IEP website resources, please feel free to reach out to Tresa Marshall (Elementary), Laurissa Evancio (Middle), or Debra Caso-Roland (Secondary) to walk alongside you in the CB-IEP planning, writing and implementation process.
