February 2023
Powerfully pausing is only the first step in better decision-making. It’s what we do next that will have impactful consequences. When we pause, it gives us the space and grace to seek or gather understanding in order to:
|
|
|
|
a. identify the root* of what is occurring for a student or a colleague, from your perspective, and also when appropriate, including student voice and colleague collaboration, b. consider barriers* getting in the way of success or calm, c. generate strategies* with which to best move forward, and d. finally, acting* with compassion.
When we pause and gather understanding before acting, it allows us to do as Archbishop Desmond Tutu has insightfully offered, “where we need to stop just pulling people out of the river. We need to go upstream and find out why they’re falling in.” Pausing gives us the opportunity as ‘human developers’ to “go upstream” to understand so that we can act ‘smarter, not harder,’ and with greater compassion to further develop
our culture of care.

3 QUOTES
Pause. Productivity is overrated. What counts most is the quality of output, not the quantity. People may be impressed by the volume you produce, but impact depends on the value you create. Success isn’t about getting more things done. It’s about doing more worthwhile things well. - Adam Grant
Understand. You can’t properly process thoughts if your insides are telling you you are standing in front of a tiger. - Peter Levine
Act. The answer to the world’s most significant human-centered problem is simply this: we are just wanting to be acknowledged and feel seen. Then, and only then, will we rise. - Dr. Jody Carrington

- The Power of a Pause: Why It Helps to Stop Before DecidingIf you asked me what‘s the one piece of wisdom everyone should take, it would be to pause before deciding. It is as simple as that. No mental models, no insights into cognitive biases – although being aware of them certainly helps.

1 QUESTION How much curiosity and gathering of understanding is embedded in my processes supporting student planning? Does my curiosity change my processes and planning for students, or are my processes fixed?

FEBRUARY SNASHOT TOPIC: Resolving Conflict

|

Pink Shirt Day February 22, 2023 This year we are introducing the importance of being kind to ourselves. Kindness to ourselves is kindness to others. As our own well-being increases, we are more able and likely to be patient, supportive, forgiving, and loving. To take care of others, we have to take care of our self; otherwise we start running on empty. As we grow in happiness and inner strength we have more to offer to others.

4 Keys to CB-IEPs - Under Construction: Open to “Test Driving” As we continue to dive into the CB-IEP process together, we are listening, learning, and responsively refining our supports. To continue this responsivity, we’d like you to see what we’re doing, feel free to “test drive” it, and offer your feedback. We’re including the DRAFT of our 4 Keys to CB-IEPs with a Guiding CB-IEP Process Checklist.
|
|
|
The intention with 4 Keys is to offer both an accessible starting point for those just dipping their toes in, and easy-to-remember, quick hit approach prompts to keep in mind for those diving and swimming in the deep end. The Guiding CB-IEP Process Checklist aligns with the 4 Keys while offering a step-by-step checklist from start to “finish” with:
- CB-IEP Meeting Preparation
- CB-IEP Team Meeting
- Professional Team CB-IEP Writing, and
- Assess, Reflect, Respond which reminds us that the CB-IEP is a responsive and ongoing goal-setting and planning process rather than a product.
