Designation Documentation Supports

March 2023

Diagnoses and designations position our thinking within competing narratives. On one hand, funding formulas for designations and supports are based on a deficit model, and stigmas have been attached to diagnoses for their atypical qualities. On the other hand, what makes us different or those qualities that make us stand out from the crowd are often some of our greatest gifts and what others value most about us as friends, colleagues or teammates.
Both narratives are not always in balance for our families, our students, ourselves. Imagine if it was you who changed the narrative for a family about their child, for a teacher about their student, for a student about themselves. What if through your powerful pause amid these competing narratives, with your intentionally wholistic understanding of your student, everything changed for them and in all that makes them unique, they found their gifts, their superpowers.

Neither a lofty degree of intelligence nor imagination nor both together go to the making of genius. Love, love, love, that is the soul of genius. - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

We often talk about neurodivergence as something to overcome. Remember that the things that make us atypical can be our greatest strengths. - Dr. Perry Mandanis
We have characteristics that make us who we are, and in some contexts, those are liabilities and in some they are strengths. In some contexts, ADHD is an absolute superpower. I have crazy creativity. My mind can operate like a pinball machine where I see patterns and connect dots that most people can‘t see, and I can do it a lot quicker than they can. Why can‘t we tell children with ADHD that they have hyper-focus that occasionally comes with distractibility as opposed to telling kids they have a deficit or a disorder, and that if they‘re lucky, they‘ll figure out the superpower. I want us to teach kids about their superpowers. - Simon Sinek

1 QUESTION

How do we inspire others to flip-the-script on neurodivergence, diagnoses, or designations and see the superpowers within?
