Asia Pacific Foundation: "What Does a Just Energy Transition Look Like for China’s Coal Sector?"

Published: February 24, 2023
Written by: Patrick Wen Rui Leong

"As the world’s largest coal producer and consumer, China knows that its reliance on coal must be curbed if it is serious about its commitment to peak its carbon emissions by 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2060. Although growing concerns about national energy security are fueling a short-term increase in coal output and power, any net-zero pathway for China will require a phase-down, if not a total phase-out, of coal."

Al Jazeera: "‘Changing global order’: China’s hand in the Iran-Saudi deal"

Published: March 11, 2023
Written by: Mersiha Gadzo

"China’s efforts in brokering a deal between Iran and Saudi Arabia have been seen by analysts as broader signs of a “changing global order”.
During talks in Beijing on Friday, Saudi Arabia and Iran agreed to re-establish diplomatic relations and reopen their embassies within two months. The agreement also stipulated affirming 'the respect for the sovereignty of states and the non-interference in internal affairs of states'."

The Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft: "Ending Primacy to End U.S. Wars"

Published: April 7, 2022
Written by: Daniel Bessner

"The Iraq War was overdetermined in that tensions between the U.S. and Iraq were rooted fundamentally in Iraq’s perceived challenge to U.S. regional dominance. Consequently, in the “unipolar moment,” a U.S. effort to change the regime in Baghdad was bound to occur after some spark, such as the September 11 attacks, set it in motion.
Today, a similar desire to sustain dominance in Asia places the U.S. on a collision course with China. To avoid war with China, policy elites must reconceive their commitment to primacy and recognize that the United States will not be able to dictate terms in its relations with others in an emergent multipolar world."

Canadian Dimension: "Canada‘s ’China syndrome‘"

Published: March 15, 2023
Written by: Taylor Noakes

The allegation that China attempted to interfere in Canada‘s 2019 and 2021 federal elections is just the latest example of Sinophobic hysteria conjured up by the agencies whose actions remind us that the term ’military intelligence‘ is an oxymoron.

"I’m mystified by the extensive deference and respect for the spies and security agencies responsible for the leaks in the China election interference inferno."

The Hill: "China seeks strategic balance, not global domination"

Published: March 9, 2023
Written by: Andrew Latham

Over the last decade or so, a new conventional wisdom has come to dominate the U.S. foreign policy establishment — that China has a grand strategy to displace the U.S. as the world‘s preeminent power or hegemon...
But is this actually the case? Is China really committed to achieving global domination? Has Beijing really embarked upon a final struggle to assert the Chinese Communist Party‘s mastery of the globe?

Historical Reflections:

Counterpunch: "A Very Brief History of Capitalism, Empire, and the Yellow Peril"

Published: March 10, 2023
Written by: David Rovics

"Unlike the propagandists that publish most of the textbooks that we brainwash our children with in the US, reality-based historians have oft observed that the history of civilization is a history of the ongoing conflict between the haves and the have-nots, the rich and the poor, the ruling class and those they would like to rule.  One of the main factors that continually makes this conflict a very dynamic one that is forever unfolding in new ways is the obvious inequity of the whole thing, with a small class of rulers, owners, and landlords always trying to control a very large majority of subjects, workers and tenants.  In order to maintain such a state of constant inequality, particularly in severely unequal societies/empires like the United States, strategies of divide and rule are always in play, whether we’re talking about maintaining domestic tranquility, or running the global American empire."

Global News: "75 years ago, a Chinese-Canadian broke the NHL colour barrier"

Published: March 13, 2023
Written by: Heather Yourex-West

In a time when Chinese Canadians did not have the right to vote, when the Chinese Exclusion Act prevented people of Chinese origin from immigrating to Canada, a Chinese-Canadian kid from British Columbia was excelling on the ice...
He was the leading scorer and packed Madison Square Gardens with fans from the city‘s Chinese community. There were rumours that year that Kwong would get called up to the NHL — but it didn‘t happen.
Kwong would have to wait two long years, but on March 13, 1948, his time finally came and for one single shift, Kwong skated in the NHL — a New York Ranger at the Montreal Forum.
