Reporting
May 2023

Meaningful assessment is just one component of a greater iterative process preparing our students for a “lifetime of continuous and autonomous learning” (McTighe & Tucker, 2022). When assessment is transparent, based on student-driven or collaborative goals that are well-developed with student involvement to design achievable objectives and effective strategies, individual engagement and collective transformation emerge.

What if we looked at Learning Updates (Report Cards) as written opportunities to offer witness to students’ development, recognize students’ striving to be better, acknowledge that sometimes striving to be better is in the small visible or invisible “holding” until it is safe to move forward, and that the most meaningful and reflective assessment happens everyday? Both thoughtfully witnessing an individual’s path and offering intentional feedback in everyday moments, mentors the processes that promote truly powerful change.

The human soul doesn’t always want to be advised or fixed or saved, it simply wants to be witnessed. - Parker Palmer

When we love, we always strive to become better than we are. When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better, too. - Paulo Coelho
The highest compliment from someone who disagrees with you is not, “You were right.” It is, “You made me think.” Good arguments help us to recognize complexity where we once saw simplicity. The ultimate purpose of debate is not to produce consensus. It’s to promote critical thinking. - Adam Grant

2 TO READ OR TRY

READ - To align with the new Reporting Policy, which states that learning is communicated within one Learning Update (report card) for ALL students, please see the SD 61 CB IEP Reporting Guidelines draft for September 2023. The guidelines outline recommendations for communicating student learning and progress in relation to CB IEP goals, including:
  • No inserts recommended
  • LST/Counsellor/ELL/Classroom Teacher collaboration to communicate progress
  • Core and curricular goals with at least one objective reported in each Learning Update
These draft CB IEP reporting guidelines will be on our website alongside the general reporting guidelines. We welcome feedback from your school teams.
TRY: Developing Self Directed Learners by Design
Meaningful assessment is purposeful and iterative. Preparing students to flourish in a modern, dynamic future means developing lifelong skills that will make an essential difference - setting effective goals, designing achievement plans, independently directing their own learning, and assessing with purpose that drives in- and out-of-school achievements. McTighe and Tucker (2022) offer a template and recommend 4 actions to make this come to life:
yd2

  1. Prioritize self-directed learning as a fundamental goal of education,
  2. Identify and map the key skills associated with self-directed learning,
  3. Explicitly teach and reinforce these skills, and
  4. Provide students with regular opportunities to practice self-directing their learning.

1 QUESTION TO PONDER

How do we empower students to engage in assessment as a meaningful, recurring and increasingly independent practice focused on driving their next steps for learning, growth and success?

Please see the Guiding Framework & Google Folder to assist students needing additional transition support as they prepare to enter Middle or Secondary school.

We ask that you identify your Spring Up students (on the emailed excel sheet sent on April 4th), so that members of the District Team can offer additional support and/or check-ins during their transition, as needed.
You can email your list to cpelletier@sd61.bc.ca and reach out if you need any additional support with this year's version of Spring Up.

Designation Requests

Designation Requests continue to be processed through the District Referral App. The Designation (ASD, IBI, PDCH) Review Committee meets the 3rd Wednesday of each month to review new designation requests. If you could use support collaborating to coordinate a designation package or support using the app, please feel free to connect with any DLST
