I hope that the last days of summer have been rejuvenating and set you all up for a new and exciting school year! For the last year and a bit, I (Samantha Nock) have been the one sending our monthly Indigenous Initiatives newsletter. It has been an absolute pleasure to curate resources, hear your feedback, and receive your out of office emails (haha). I am excited to pass on the newsletter over to the wonderful and talented Carissa Block, who will be authoring and sending our monthly update for the next year, as I step into a new role on the II Team.

The Indigenous Initiatives Design Series (II Design Series) is a cohort program for members of the UBC teaching and learning community who come to Indigenous topics with different levels of knowledge and expertise. This is a three-part workshop series for anyone who wants to:
- Learn new strategies on incorporating Indigenous content into courses and nurturing safer classroom climate for Indigenous students
- Share practices to support meaningful and responsible engagement with Indigenous content and ways of knowing
- Redesign elements of their teaching and learning projects and resources
- Model and explore place-based educational materials
- Apply classroom climate principles to everyday learning design situations
Through interactive, blended synchronous and asynchronous activities and peer-to-peer discussion, participants will take a closer look at classroom climate, instructor/student positionality, and place. Registration is open to all members of the UBC teaching and learning community who have familiarity with teaching, learning design, are committed to integrating Indigenous perspectives and topics into their courses, and have completed some Indigenous focused professional development (such as attending Classroom Climate series workshops). Orange Shirt Day, September 30, is a day to honour and uphold Survivors and Intergenerational Survivors of the Indian Residential School system, and to commemorate those who didn’t return home. The Indian Residential School History and Dialogue Centre has
compiled a list of events taking place in the coming weeks. We encourage you to share this link with your colleagues and students. On September 30th join the rest of the UBC community to participate in
the Intergenerational March led by Applied Science and Land and Food Systems and supported by the President's Office at UBC.

Xwi7xwa Library - 1985 West Mall, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, V6T 1Z2Join the Xwi7 xwa library as they roll out
the Indigenous Atlas of Canada Giant Floor Map. In this session, we encourage participants to think differently about location and place through guided in activities and hands on learning while on walking on and exploring the map. Following the outside demonstration (about an hour), Xwi7xwa will give a tour of their branch. To help guide implementation of the Indigenous Strategic Plan (ISP), the Office of Indigenous Strategic Initiatives (OISI) developed a set of tools which both academic and operational units can use to help situate themselves in relation to Indigenous engagement and create a plan that aligns their work with the ISP’s eight goals and 43 actions.
Many units, teams, and departments have begun working with the ISP toolkit over the past two years. This panel is an opportunity to learn from their experiences and ask questions that will help you move forward with the ISP toolkit.

The Office of Indigenous Strategic Initiatives (OISI) will discuss information about the Indigenous Strategic Initiatives (ISI) Fund. This information session will discuss Stream 1: Innovative Projects, Stream 2: Transformative Projects and Stream 3: Student-led Projects. The ISI Fund is open to UBC-Vancouver and UBC-Okanagan faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students. To find out more about the ISI Fund in advance of the session, please visit

Identity Matters: Connecting Power, Privilege and Bias to Anti-Racism Work

Anti-Racism and Solidarity in University Settings

This foundational workshop offers participants an overview of key concepts related to race, racism and systems of oppression, and explores anti-racist practices through a lens of solidarity and allyship in university settings. We situate our concepts in current events and we look at how racism shows up at UBC. We will also discuss anti-racist practices that support students, faculty, and staff who identify as Black, Indigenous, or People of Colour. In this workshop, we begin by grounding ourselves in our goals as educators, and framing our own motivation for engaging in this work. The workshop is a combination of presentation slides, reflective activities, and interactive small group discussions.

Navigating Emotional Responses in the Classroom

This workshop recognizes that emotions are part of the classroom climate. Instructors are tasked with the complex role of navigating their own emotions in the classroom, while also recognizing the emotions of their students and determining the best way to support them. The significance of this role is particularly prevalent when discussing topics surrounding race, racialization, and racism. This session will explore how race and power dynamics have emotional impacts in the classroom environment (both for students and educators). The intention is for participants to leave with an increased capacity to interact with emotional responses as points of pedagogical and relational engagement.

A Family of Dreamers delves into the complexities of growing up in rural northeast British Columbia and the love and grief that bloom there. In this debut poetry collection, Samantha Nock redefines where and what “home” is, weaving together threads of fat liberation, desirability politics, and heartbreak while working through her existence as a young Indigenous woman coming of age in the city. The result is a love song to northern cuzzins, dive bars, and growing up.

Call for proposals for Small Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund Innovation projects Small TLEF Innovation grants are intended to support experimentation with pedagogical approaches that have strong potential to enhance learning through grassroots projects. Small TLEF Innovation applicants can request up to $50,000 over the life of the project, which can span between one and three years. Small TLEF Innovation projects should advance UBC‘s Strategic Plan and be aligned with one or more of the TLEF Fund priorities for 2024/25. The deadline for proposals is 3pm on November 16, 2023.

By participating in this program, students will have the opportunity to engage with local communities, learn about the rich cultural heritage of the Haida Nation, and explore the concepts of sustainability, social justice, and community building. Through a combination of experiential learning, interdisciplinary coursework, and community engagement, students will gain practical skills and develop a deep understanding of community resilience.
