SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER SNASHOT TOPIC: It Takes a Village

All levels - It Takes a Village
CB IEP INFORMATION

SAMPLE SCRIPT for email to families about IEP process in October…”What’s going on behind the scenes?”

Dear Families,

We have been so grateful spending this past month getting to know your child better. As we spend time intentionally understanding their interests, identity, and personal, social and intellectual strengths and stretches, we are using this information to support their personal goals and goal setting.
yd2
With their teachers, we are collaboratively designing ways to ensure their successes in the classroom and on the playground, responsive to their strengths and stretches. Our new competency-based Individual Education Plans (IEPs) are purposefully designed with:

  • our students' voices at the center (Who are they through their eyes? What do they really want to learn that would help their success? "Nothing about us without us.")
  • strength-based approach (What are their gifts? What strengths can they use to help them to learn the things that may be difficult?)
  • agency in their own self-determination (Is their voice integral in achieving their dreams?)
  • place and purpose (Is their plan connecting them to a greater sense of belonging? Have we ensured that all they need to be successful is planned for and ready for them in every place they will learn at school?)
yd2
A great deal of collaboration with your child and our learning team has gone into designing their IEP so that we have a robust plan to collaborate around in our discussion with you, to ensure we honour the time you're able to meet with us. From here, we would love to meet with you to collaborate around the plan with which we've begun to ensure that we are all working on agreed upon priority goals, employing the best ways we collectively understand work for your child.
Then, you can offer Option A or B, depending on whether you intend to set up meetings via email or phone.

OPTION A: I will be calling you this week to find a time that works for you and our learning team?

OPTION B: Our learning team is available on the following dates/times to collaborate around your child's IEP. Please let me know those dates/times that work best for you.
 your school teams.

SAMPLE SCRIPT about changes to IEP reporting

As a result of the provincial changes to reporting student progress, the way teachers tell parents about their child's IEP progress is changing to match new ways of teaching and learning.

What will be different?
Previously, a progress report would be provided as a separate insert along with the report card.
yd2
Throughout the school year, you will receive updates regarding your child‘s learning.  This means that there will not be a separate document to report on IEP progress.  Instead, case managers and classroom teachers will collaborate to report on IEP goals within one report card document.
What will be the same?
An IEP will be created in the Fall as an outcome of a collaborative team meeting and used as a guiding document to identify the additional supports your child may need.

For more information on changes to reporting, visit K-12 Student Reporting Information for Parents and Caregivers.

Support for Families - Disability Tax Credit and Registered Disability Savings Accounts

The RDSP Project's mission is to get children (ages 19 and under) on Vancouver Island connected with the Disability Tax Credit and Registered Disability Savings Accounts. When a child with disabilities opens an RDSP, they can be eligible for thousands in government grants and bonds to save for their future.  As a project funded by Island Health, they are able to offer free 1-on-1 support to families who want help. Not only do we provide all the background information on eligibility for both the DTC and RDSP, we help with filling in forms and guiding families through the process from start to finish.
